        The Mandarin’s House, is a modern Chinese thinker Zheng Guanying in Macao's residence, located in the Penha Hill, a traditional Chinese-style building in front of the Lilau Square, by Zheng Guanying’s Father Zheng Wenrui preparation, built year is about 1881.

A brief introduction of Zheng Guanying

 

        Zheng Guanying (born in 1842) is a Chinese thinker and businessman, he went to Shanghai to follow his relatives in business and learning English, he wrote in Shanghai, and the article was also published in Shanghai. On the political stand, Zheng advocate "Constitutional monarchy" while advocating western democratic government; business, he have been run a paper company, but also invested in the Qing Dynasty's Westernization enterprises, such as Shang-hai Mechanical Textile Bureau. Later, because of business disputes, Zheng retire to Macau, living in the Mandarin’s house, and re-organize previous articles. In 1894, Zheng Guanying lifelong thought theory and social analysis summed up and written " Words of Warning in Times of Prosperity (Shengshi Weiyan )" published, this is a famous book of ideology and Social theory in the China, is precisely in the mandarin's house in Macau completed.    

 

        After the founding of the Republic of China, Zheng Guanying was mainly engaged in education in Shanghai. In 1921, Zheng retire. The following year, he died and the coffin was returned to Macau for burial.

The Mandarin’s house from abandoned to rebirth

        The Mandarin’s house about 4000 square meters, the 1920 's with Zheng Home moved out, the Mandarin’s house began to rent out, to 1950 years, has reached dozens of families to stay, then gradually deserted. Until 2001, The Macao Government  got proprietorship of the property and repaired the Mandarin’s house, when the staff of the Cultural Institute of Macao found that the house had experienced years of weathered, and that more than 80% of the architecture was suffering from different degrees of damage, so that the restoration project reached eight years.

       Visit The Mandarin’s house, can appreciate the traditional Chinese architecture characteristic from the architectural esthetics angle. " Yu-Qing-Tang", is the living room of the Zheng’s family. The flashfly picture painting to " Yu-Qing-Tang" as the protagonist, made a unique optical portrait, turn on the light button switch, the lights on both ends of the hall, to reproduce the ancient lighting situation, visitors can enjoy the flashfly pictures or buy a souvenir at the gift shop at the main entrance "moon gate" side.
